The Blog Hard Panel this morning included Brooklyn Based, Jauntsetter, VendrTV, and Fucked In Park Slope. Here are my notes from the panel.
Metaphor: Blogs and sites are ecosystems. Try to achieve a balance with your audience and, when it comes to commenters, avoid letting the algae take over the pond.
Be an expert: Write about stuff that others aren’t and be an expert.
Fans: Know your community. Treat Youtube, Flickr, Twitter and Facebook users differently. Messaging users in different communities using one method won’t work.
Promotion - Content vs. SEO: Content is king. But don’t ignore SEO. Tag stuff properly (On YouTube, use the same tags for every piece of content and users will find you). SEO is not a mystery. Read up on Google and YouTube tricks.
Traffic: Keep people on the site. Fucked In Park Slope uses related posts to get users to dig back into older content.
Design Tip: Heat maps are an essential for understanding usability on a site. Every blogger who cares about UX should pay attention to where users click. (Dan’s tip: use Crazy Egg)
